Photographing my guys. [Philadelphia 'Burbs Mommyographer]

July 12, 2010

Is not an easy task! Believe me. Just because I am a professional photographer does not mean my children know or care about this fact.  I do not photograph them as much as I used to, somewhat because they complain, somewhat because we are busier and then there is the part of me that has to face how much they are growing when I see them in photographs. (oh sappy Mommy.) Of course then I get that call or email from my Mother complaining she does not have any recent photographs of her grandson’s which helps get me back on track. (Sorry Grammy.)  My New Years resolution and goal this year was to document my family more and spend more time photographing my children when they were not expecting it. I failed. Big time. Ha! However, this summer has allowed me many more opportunities to capture my beautiful boys.  On the 4th of July at a family bbq they were feeling some brotherly love and I was right there with Nikon in hand to snap it. It is a rare moment indeed that I both witnessed and captured it but all around but makes my week!  (I’m pretty sure they were whispering fart jokes but I do not care. =)

The first face is what I normally get from my sometimes very serious seven year old. He is logical, full of interesting facts and loves to debate however if he lets his guard down his smile is the best.  He has become very hard to photograph. However if I let him give me a pop quiz on a topic he is into he will chat forever. I believe he was testing my knowledge of mountain heights here. Not exactly my area of expertise and he loves showing his Mommy how much smart he is than I.

If you are lucky enough to meet my five year old you know he is full of laughter, smiles and silliness. He wakes up each and every day completely cheerful with a “good morning Mommy I love you!”  He loves to be photographed by my cell phone however not so much by the “big” camera – go figure.  In order for me to get great connection I say “tell me a story.” I believe he was telling me about pirates in a sea of macaroni and cheese to get these great expressions. Try it on your kids. What will make them connect with you to get that wonderful shot?

Just a little Mommy gush today.

I am honored again this year to be nominated for Nickelodeon’s Parent’s Pick for Philadelphia Family Photographer. So if you get a chance, I would love your vote! Thank you!
